College Publisher, a Viacom-owned company that manages many student newspapers’ online content, has decided to get rid of a requirement that prohibited clients from publishing critical news about Viacom or its subsidiaries.

The company got into a contract dispute with Ka Leo O Hawai’i, the University of Hawaii-Manoa’s newspaper, over the rule, according to the Honolulu Weekly. Viacom, which runs big-name media ventures such as MTV, Comedy Central, and Paramount Pictures, had never enforced the prohibition, said a spokesman. Still, student journalists see the contract change as a victory for freedom of the press. —Dan Carnevale
